Winter Motorcycle Prep and Storage Tips

Gearing Up for Winter

As the days get shorter and the temperature begins to drop, it’s clear that the riding season is taking a turn into the cooler months. For many of us, this signals a time to start thinking about prepping our beloved motorcycles for winter storage. The right preparation ensures that come spring, you’re ready to hit the road with minimal fuss. Here are some essential tips to help you properly prepare and store your motorcycle for the winter months.

1. Give It a Good Clean

Before storing your motorcycle, giving it a thorough clean is crucial. Road salts, dirt, and grime can cause corrosion if left unattended for months. Wash every nook and cranny, dry it completely to avoid any moisture, which could lead to rust, and apply a coat of wax for added protection.

2. Change the Oil and Filter

Used oil contains acids, moisture, and other byproducts of combustion that can corrode engine parts during the offseason. Changing the oil and filter before storage will help ensure that your bike has fresh lubrication free from contaminants sitting in the engine over winter.

3. Add Fuel Stabilizer

Gasoline can degrade and oxidize over time, leaving gummy residues that can clog up the fuel system. Before tucking your bike away, fill the tank to the top with fresh fuel and a quality fuel stabilizer. This prevents moisture from accumulating inside the tank and helps keep the fuel fresh.

4. Take Care of the Battery

The battery can lose charge and become damaged if left unchecked through the winter. To maintain its health, disconnect and remove the battery, then store it in a cool, dry place. Use a trickle charger or battery tender to keep it charged during the winter months, ensuring it’s ready to go when spring arrives.

5. Protect the Tires

If left sitting in one position all winter, your bike’s tires can develop flat spots. To prevent this, raise the motorcycle off the ground using stands. This removes weight from the tires and suspension, preserving their shape and integrity.

6. Plug the Intakes and Exhaust

Mice and other small critters are known to make homes in motorcycle exhausts and air intakes during the cold months. Use an exhaust plug to seal the muffler, and consider covering air intakes to keep any unwelcome guests out.

7. Cover It Up

Even indoors, dust and debris can accumulate on your motorcycle’s surface. A breathable, high-quality motorcycle cover will keep it clean and protected, reducing the need for an extensive clean-up come spring.

8. Choose an Appropriate Storage Location

The ideal place to store your bike is in a cool, dry, and secure space away from any direct sunlight. Garages or storage units are perfect, but if those aren’t options, a sturdy motorcycle cover with theft protection could suffice outdoors.

Taking the time to properly prepare your motorcycle for winter storage not only preserves your ride but also makes for an easier and more enjoyable start to the next riding season. With these steps, you can rest easy knowing your motorcycle is snug and secure, ready to roar back to life when the warmer days roll around again.
